Today's fun fact: The 1936 Presidential Election

In 1936 Franklin Delano Roosevelt ran for re-election against Alfred "Al" Landon. Of the forty eight states, Landon only carried two - Maine and Vermont. Up to FDR's time, a candidate who carried Maine usually won the election - "As Maine goes, so goes the nation." After Landon's performance, the joke was: "As Maine goes, so goes Vermont."
